El origen del actual Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla está en un Convento de la orden de la Merced. Tras la desamortización de los bienes eclesiásticos, este edificio se convirtió en Museo de Pinturas con obras traídas de otros conventos e iglesias. La construcción de este convento se le encargó al arquitecto municipal: Juan de Oviedo.
La obra más emblemática de Juan de Oviedo es, sin duda, la Iglesia y el Convento de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, obra que se comienza en el año 1602 y cuya fase principal se concluye en 1612.
En esta obra el autor desarrolla sus dotes como arquitecto creando unos espacios clásicos de tendencia manierista de gran elegancia donde destacan los claustros, con arquerías sobre columnas toscanas en planta baja y ventanas alternando con paramentos lisos en la planta superior.
Asimismo es de gran importancia lo que mostramos en la foto de hoy, su monumental escalera que comunica los tres patios, cubierta con una cúpula sobre trompas adornadas con yeserías de corte manierista.
The origin of the current Museum of Fine arts of Seville is in a Convent of the order of the Mercy. After the disentailment of the ecclesiastic goods, this building turned into Museum of Paintings with paints taken from other convents and churches. The construction of this convent was done by the municipal architect: Juan de Oviedo.
The Juan de Oviedo's most emblematic work was, undoubtedly, the Church and the Convent of Our Lady of the Mercy, work who is begun in the year 1602 and whose principal phase concludes in 1612.
In this work the author develops his endowments as architect creating a few classic spaces of manierist trend of great elegance where the cloisters stand out, with series of arches on toscan columns in ground floor and windows alternating with smooth paraments in the top floor.
Likewise it performs great importance what we show in the today photo, his monumental stairs that communicates three courts, cover with a dome on horns adorned with plaster-works of manierist style.
