Alcázar (38): El Jardín de la Cruz.

En tiempos de Felipe IV, rey mecenas de las artes, se mandó construir en 1626 un laberinto alrededor de un montículo que representaba al monte Parnaso.
Dentro del montículo hay unas esculturas de ninfas.
Aunque hoy no quedan más que algunos restos, podemos imaginar la estructura sinuosa elaborada con mirto. Esta planta simbolizaba en la Antigüedad el amor y la belleza, y con coronas de mirto se honraba a los campeones olímpicos. Se trató quizá de un homenaje al propio monarca, apodado “El Grande”.

In times of Felipe IV, king lord of the arts, got about himself to construct in 1626 a labyrinth about a small mount that was representing to the mount Parnassus.
Inside the mount there are a few nymphs' sculptures.
more than any remains, we can imagine the sinuous structure elaborated with myrtle. This plant was symbolizing in the Antiquity the love and the beauty, and by wreaths of myrtle the Olympic champions were honoring. It was a question probably as an honoring the monarch, the nicknamed "The Big".
