En el año 1963, el Ayuntamiento de Sevilla, convoco un concurso público para erigir un monumento a Juan Sebastian el Cano, y conmemorar así el hecho de que, el 10 de agosto de 1519, 250 hombres zarparan de Sevilla a bordo de cinco barcos capitaneados por Fernando de Magallanes, y tras realizar la gran epopeya de dar la vuelta al mundo, regresaron a Sevilla el 8 de septiembre de 1522, con tan solo 18 hombres, un solo barco, la "Nao Victoria".

In 1963, the Seville´s Town hall summon a public contest to raise a monument to Juan Sebastian Elcano, and to commemorate this way the fact that, on August 10, 1519, 250 men were setting sail from Seville on board of five ships led by Fernando de Magellanes, and after realizing the great epic of giving the round-the-world trip, they returned to Seville on September 8, 1522, with only 18 men, an alone ship, the " Vessel Victory ".
