La estatua del Rey San Fernando

La estatua ecuestre del Rey San Fernando está situada en el centro de la Plaza Nueva, una plaza que está presidida por el edificio del Ayuntamiento de la ciudad.
El primer nombre de esta plaza fue el de Plaza de San Francisco, en recuerdo al convento que estuvo allí ubicado, en 1857 la renombraron como Plaza de la Infanta Isabel.
Las desavenencias políticas llevaron a cambiarle el nombre en 1868 por el de Plaza de la Libertad siendo esa misma razón por la que en 1873 pasó a ser conocida como Plaza de la República y también el 9 de diciembre de ese mismo año Plaza de la República Federal.
Llegado el año 1875, el nombre fue cambiado por el de Plaza de San Fernando.
La plaza era un espacio diáfano con un único elemento en el centro, una farola, que posteriormente sería reemplazada por un quiosco para banda musical, su duración fue muy breve, en 1877 fue colocada la primera piedra del monumento al Rey San Fernando en el centro del solar, pero no sería inaugurado hasta el 15 de agosto de 1924.

The equestrian statue of the King San Fernando is placed in the center of the Plaza Nueva, a square that is presided by the building of the Town Hall of the city.
The first name of this square was Plaza of San Francisco, in memory of the convent that was located there, in 1857 they renamed her as Plaza de la Infanta Isabel.
